![]() Thank you very much! Unbound: Worlds Apart invites players to take on the role of Soli, conjuring magic portals to travel between different realities in order to learn more about the catastrophe that ravaged his world. What is the game all about and what can players expect when they jump in? I've played a little bit of the Unbound: Worlds Apart demo, and it was delightful. After Polandball was released, we started prototyping new ideas, which eventually became Unbound: Worlds Apart, the game we are currently working on. ![]() I wanted to develop games in my free time outside of my job. After two years and a few prototypes, we launched our first game, Polandball: Can into Space, in 2016.Īlien Pixel became my main hobby. That's the moment when Alien Pixel came to life. I immediately loved the atmosphere! The people and the passion they had for developing ideas was inspiring. My fortunes changed in 2014 when a friend asked me to go with him to a Ubisoft game jam, and without a second thought, I joined him. So, in university, I made a shift to other domains (web, automotive) because it was much easier to find a job. It was fun times!īack then, I didn't know anything about the Romanian gaming industry. Back in 2005 while I was still in high school, I started to take programming seriously and was curious about how other people develop their games. I’ve honestly had a strong passion for games from a young age. Thanks for chatting with us! Can you please tell us a bit about how Alien Pixel came to life? Why did you decide to jump into indie game development? We had a chance to connect with lead designer Sergiu Craitoiu as he talks about quitting his day job to commit to Unbound full-time, why Alien Pixel chose to go with crowdfunding, and what it was like learning Unreal Engine 4 while jumping into development. Using portals to different dimensions as a clever mechanic to introduce new player abilities, Unbound is a dark fairy tale that is rife with unique puzzles and the boost of support from enthusiastic backers opens up the opportunity for even more possibilities. Having achieved their funding goal, Alien Pixel is now looking to finish the second half of the game. With initial development starting back in August of 2016, Unbound: Worlds Apart is currently wrapping up its Kickstarter. The result is a hand-painted platformer that cleverly uses portals to bring mind-bending multi-dimensional puzzles to reality. Learning Unreal Engine 4 on the fly as they dove into development, the duo leaned on a multitude of resources from Reddit to YouTube to get up to speed on everything the engine has to offer. Bosses, a staple of that genre, while present, are exceedingly scarce and even though there are so few, they can repeat as well, which makes things feel slightly less climactic than they should be.Por Shawn Petraschuk Unbound: Worlds Apart is a stunning looking project being brought to life by two-person studio Alien Pixel. For the most part, everything is a series of linear challenges with all of the game’s hidden content easily conquerable as soon as it is available. While it does have some areas that are inaccessible until the player has gotten a certain amount of the way through the story, this is very rare. Likely the one that will prove most irksome to the general audience is the way that the game looks and feels like a Metroidvania. While Unbound is certainly a solid title, it is not without its flaws, though most of them are very minor. ![]() Further incentivizing this course of action is that only once enough villagers are saved, some of the game’s hardest areas are unlocked, which allows even those driven only by challenge to see the bigger picture. This is not all there is to know however, and, cleverly, Unbound encourages players to find this out by having lost villagers, who Soli has to rescue, each give a little piece of the story. It has just come to visit Soli’s reality, and if anyone is to survive, the blight must be taken out at the source, the Demon King. A corrupting influence is spreading across the Sea of Reality, which connects all of the worlds in the universe, and leaves naught but demons and desolation in its wake. ![]() While kept purposefully nebulous at first, the story slowly unravels through dialogue with various characters found in the world. For those wishing for a good narrative experience, Unbound has plenty to offer. ![]()
